THE BASICS

BAND MEMBERS

Tarah G. Carpenter, Vocals, Guitar

Coralie Herve, Drums

YEAR FORMED

2006

CH : I'm Coralie Herve, drummer of Tarah Who?. I'm from Brittany, France.

TGC: I started performing as a singer-songwriter in 2006. Over the years, that solo project became Tarah Who? I play the guitar and I sing :)

YOUR MUSICAL PAST AND PRESENT IN ONE RUN-ON SENTENCE.

TGC: Tarah Who? s music is the reflection of my emotions and how I see the world at that moment in time.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND TO SOMEONE WHO HASN’T YET HEARD YOUR MUSIC?

CH : Our sound is a mix between different genres like rock/punk/grunge but at the same time unique.

TGC: Yeah.. I want to describe my emotions at best and if that means that this song is going to be more punk or more grunge than another, then it will. I don't really care to stay in a specific genre, but we still manage to have our own sound.

HOW DID THE STARS ALIGN TO BRING YOU ALL TOGETHER?

CH : Tarah and I were friends on facebook (had some drummer friends in common), I messaged her when I was coming to study at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. She messaged me when she was looking for a drummer for her band.

TGC: The rest is history;)

IF BANDS WERE REQUIRED TO HAVE A SLOGAN … WHAT WOULD YOUR BAND SLOGAN BE?

TGC: The story of my life right here! Hate coming up with slogans, bios, and whatnot! Trust me, if I had a good slogan for us, it would be all over the place!

MUSIC

A PROJECT YOU’RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON THAT YOU’RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT.

CH : We have a lot coming up in 2021, I'm really excited about !! Some new music and videos !!

TGC: We have a new album coming out in April 2021. We are releasing a single and music video from that album every month until then. It is really exciting and keeps us busy while we can't play live shows!

HOW DOES THE BAND FLESH OUT A SONG FROM START (IDEA IN YOUR HEAD) TO FINISH (RECORDING)?

TGC: I usually feel like a burst of emotions. Anger or extremely sad.. yeah it's never too happy but it is really like Therapy. You need those down days to appreciate the good ones. So anyway....it usually comes out of nowhere and I feel really inspired and in the zone.. I have to use a pen and paper because one, the thoughts come out too fast and 2 I like to feel the pain in my wrist a bit. If that makes sense... Then I let it sit for a while. Sometimes I come back to it with music a day later, sometimes right away, sometimes months later. I don't change the lyrics because those are true emotions. I usually hear the music that goes with it. It is all in my head. I had the guitar first, then the drums, and bass, and whatever sound or ideas that come up. I send the demo tracks to Jason our producer (Jason Orme, Alanis Morissette), and to Coralie with and without the drums so that she can add ideas if any but at least she gets the groove and the feeling of the song. Jason sometimes comes back with changes about the structure of the song "Try to put the bridge here or do this twice instead of once etc.." and when we all agree, we rehearse on our own and meet at the studio for a couple of days and track all of it. Then Jason adds some really cool guitars, that usually bring the final touch, we have fun adding some colors to the song like percussions or any other sounds we "hear" that would add a bit to the production, but since we are a duo, we can't add too much or it will be completely different at our live shows! Then Jason mixes the whole thing and I send it to be mastered and here we are, promoting it. ;)

WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BEST SONG YOU EVER RELEASED, AND WHY?

CH : I really like "Pantomath", I think it represents really well who we are and it was the first single released as a duo.

TGC: I can't really answer that, they are all my babies! Artistically I know why a song sounds the way it sounds and its meaning .. If that makes sense. 'Pantomath' is our latest single release and it was very well received by the press and people, which was encouraging because like Coralie said, it was our first duo release. With the new songs coming up, we tried to do something slightly different. We will see :) It also depends on the production, the lyrics, and the story. So for instance, I think that 'Unbalanced' or 'Human to be ' are lyrically strong but the production of 'Unbalanced' for instance is really weak. I love the recording story behind 'Human to be' because we were in a house that had a studio and we just had the best time while making music. I actually think that for an overall "Best song" it might be 'Manners' that came out this February 2021.

PICK ONE WORD THAT BEST DESCRIBES WHAT YOUR REHEARSALS ARE LIKE. [YOU CAN ELABORATE IF YOU’D LIKE!]

CH : Work hahahahaha.

TGC: Ha! True! yeah, I agree "work " but in a fun way. I love doing what I do, and It is fun to rehearse and come up with stuff.

ANY MUSIC VIDEOS PLANNED OR IN PRODUCTION?

TGC: Yes! We have one coming out for each month.  "Swallow That Pill' came out Jan.22, 2021.

INFLUENCES

WHICH MUSICIAN OR BAND INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A MUSICIAN?

CH : When I started playing drums there wasn't really a specific band that inspired me, but later Nightwish, a symphonic metal band from Finland, really made me want to be a professional musician.

AN ALBUM THAT’S HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON YOU.

CH : I will say "Once" by Nightwish with my favorite song "Ghost Love Score", a masterpiece!!!

TGC: The Distillers "Coral Fang". Simple, to the point, IN YOUR FACE!

VOCALIST YOU ADMIRE THE MOST?

CH : I love Floor Jansen and Amy Lee.

GUITAR SOLO THAT ALWAYS GIVES YOU GOOSEBUMPS?

CH : "Crazy Train" by Ozzy, the whole song !!

MOST BAD-ASS BASSIST?

CH : I have to say Billy Sheehan.

DRUMMER WITH KILLER CHOPS?

CH : There is so many, it's impossible to choose !!!

TGC: True, too many but I do think that Anika Nilles is pretty amazing. I think she has a unique sound that I love and an innovative way to approach the drums.

ROLLING STONES OR THE BEATLES?

TGC: Rolling Stones. Dirtier...!

PERFORMING

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-SHOW RITUALS?

CH : I like to warm up on a pad.

TGC: Isolate myself with a couple drinks, stretch.

IF POSSIBLE, DESCRIBE WHAT PERFORMING LIVE FEELS LIKE FOR YOU.

CH : Having a lot of fun and trying to give a lot of energy to the people.

TGC: it all goes really fast. When you are up there, you are responsible for entertaining a room full of people who came out to see you, or you want to try to get new people to follow you. Once you hit the first notes, you forget about all of this and it all comes naturally because the energy in the room is contagious. If the crowd is really into it, you are going to give way more than your best. You share your music, your passion, and people are receiving it live. It is an exchange that makes you feel in the present because no other thoughts interrupt the flow, everyone is having a good time.

IF YOU WERE SECOND ON A THREE-BAND BILL, WHICH BAND WOULD YOU LOVE TO BE SUPPORTING AND WHICH BAND WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO OPEN FOR YOU? [GOOD CHANCE TO PLUG A NEWER BAND YOU REALLY LIKE]

TGC: YUR MUM, TARAH WHO? , BALA ( SPAIN).

WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR FANS GET FROM YOUR MUSIC? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE THEM TO KNOW?

CH : I hope our music can help them escape and have a good time.

TGC: Totally. When I was young and listening to Alanis Morissette, I would escape and relate to her songs. I hope that our fans can do the same with our songs. I write a lot about accepting each other as humans and try not to judge people's choices and preferences in life because really.. who cares?!! Focus on your own life and goals! Let other people be!

GOALS

MOST DON’T ALLOW THEMSELVES TO BELIEVE THAT WHAT THEY REALLY WANT ... CAN ACTUALLY HAPPEN. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND VISUALIZE WHAT YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR ULTIMATE SUCCESS. WHAT DO YOU SEE?

CH : I see myself playing music all around the world !!!

TGC: Yeah I am with you! A few Grammys and a pass to be able to play anywhere in the world, and any big, packed festival!

WHAT ARE YOU DETERMINED TO SEE HAPPEN FOR YOUR BAND IN THE NEXT YEAR?

TGC: A bigger social impact. I am using this time that we can't play to work on our online presence. So I hope to actually be able to reach out to more people so that when we can start playing again, we have more fans and demands from more places! Also.. if we can have a song on the Grammys pre-selection again, that would be cool!

PERSONAL

WHAT CONCERT DID YOU ATTEND THAT YOU’LL NEVER, EVER FORGET?

CH : My first Nightwish concert, it was amazing !!!

TGC: I think my pre-baccalaureat concert of GARBAGE. I was SO SO drunk! I screamed the lyrics that I think Shirley Manson could hear me from time to time. I even stopped the show once because I was mosh-pitting.. as you do at a Rock show.. and a guy lost his glasses. I sat on my friend's shoulders and gave a sign to Shirley who stopped the show so that he could find his glasses. He did and then Shirley said "Great, and you! Stop stealing my show!" haha! The next day, I think we were taking the History test for the baccalaureat. I had no idea which topic we were doing really but I had some notes I read on my way to school. They happened to be the same as the test, and I actually passed! Which really pissed some of my school mates off because they had worked all year really hard. Fun times!

WHICH OF YOUR BAND MEMBERS:

IS ALWAYS LATE?

CH : Tarah hahahaha.

TGC: Guilty...

EATS THE HEALTHIEST?

TGC: I do for sure! lol!

IS THE PRANKSTER?

TGC: I am. Coralie's first birthday together, I surprised her with a cake full of whipped cream.

IS THE TASK MASTER TO GET THINGS DONE?

CH : Tarah !!

TGC: Ha! Yes!my M.O.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT PLAYING MUSIC, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LOVE TO DO?

CH : I like watching TV shows, movies and playing video games.

TGC: Martial arts, painting, going on a motorcycle ride, hanging out with friends and family, traveling.

IF WE WERE TO LOOK AT YOUR “GO-TO” PLAYLIST RIGHT NOW, WHO ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS WE’D SEE?

CH : It would be Nightwish, Beast In Black and Cyhra.

VINYL RECORDS, CASSETTES, CD’s, OR DOWNLOADS?

CH : I love vinyls and CDs.

TGC: CD's and Downloads. (I have an old car that can only play CD's and Downloads are very easy when you are always on the move.)

AN ALBUM YOU NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO.

CH : All of the Nightwish albums !!!

TGC: The Distillers 'Coral Fang'

WHAT ALBUM OR ARTIST DID YOUR PARENTS INTRODUCE YOU TO THAT YOU LOVE?

CH : It was my uncle with Nightwish.

TGC: Not an artist but my mom introduced me to Rock music. She would blast Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Tangerine Dream, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen etc.. while cleaning the house.

WHAT’S YOUR BENCHMARK FOR A GREAT MUSICIAN?

TGC: Authenticity and originality.
