Being a musician studying at NYU, you would think that I’ve been to all the iconic venues in the East Village. While that's STILL a work in progress, I did have the opportunity to finally catch Middle Kids with special guest Joe P the other night at the famous Irving Plaza. Checked that venue off the list!

The night started with Asbury Park native, Joe P, who unofficially goes by “Joe P the Hyena” on his socials. I remember his reasoning being that it’s his favorite animal and it sounded cool (it definitely does, Hyenas are in fact the coolest). Being a huge fan of Joe’s past band, Deal Casino, I instantly fell in love with his solo stuff. Ever since, it has been an absolute blast following his new, yet already successful musical journey. Only since last year, Joe has been able to leverage the social media platform TikTok, and has amassed almost 300,000 followers and 3.9 million likes. Through short clips and snippets of songs (both new originals and old Deal Casino ones), fans are left wanting more and end up falling in love with Joe. I (and many of my friends) are most certainly guilty of this.

Joe P’s song style is extremely unique and addictive. Not only is he a musician, but he is also a storyteller. He manages to capture all types of feelings and emotions into one instrumental and creates a majestic, larger-than-life sonic story. His greatest strength, however, will always be in his performances -- the drive and passion are insane! I’m always looking forward to catching Joe P’s next big project and will continue to push my friends to listen to his songs every time a new one comes out.

When someone asks “what kind of music do you listen to?” I usually say something along the lines of alternative indie mixed with rock n’ roll. Well, guess what? Australian band Middle Kids perfectly fits that description. The band consists of Hannah Joy (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Tim Fitz (bass, backing vocals, production), and Harry Day (drums, backing vocals). While the band calls Sydney, Australia home, they have been very successful in the US since their formation in 2016. They have made live appearances on late-night television shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Late Show with James Corden and performed at popular festivals such as GovBall and Lollapalooza. What’s even MORE impressive is that Middle Kids’ debut single, and one that hasn’t even been performed live yet, caught the attention of Sir Elton John himself!

Prior to any show I attend, I love to look up the band on Spotify and listen to what I’m about to witness. It was there where I found out this tour was in support of their recently released album, Today We’re The Greatest. My personal favorites off the album are “R U 4 Me?,” “Cellophane,” and “Stacking Chairs.” In terms of live performances, Middle Kids checks all the boxes. Hannah, being classically trained, has an absolutely mesmerizing voice. Tim’s multi-instrumentalist abilities have definitely set him apart technically. And Harry, well I’m biased; I love drummers and he was exceptional.

The group just has that chemistry (insert chemistry joke about how Hannah Joy and Tim Fitz are actually married in real life) that resonates with fans in every song they play. Their live show takes you on a journey. With the ups and the downs, it’s a beautiful roller coaster of emotions blended into one single night. If I were you, I’d buy a ticket to Middle Kids' next tour date as soon as possible. Check them out. Seriously. Why are you still reading this… check them out!

"I grew up in the electric music scene of Asbury Park, NJ, drumming since the age of 5. As a performer, I am passionate about capturing the thrilling moments artists experience on stage. My interest in concert photography has immensely grown from building relationships with local bands and venues along the Jersey Shore. I am currently studying Music Business at New York University and have since taken my talents to the city. I’m proud to share my passion as a contributor to Asbury Park Vibes! There’s no other place like Asbury Park."
