Every once in a while Spotify decides in some random, creepy way that I need to listen to a band. Squid was one of those bands. I was driving home from my girlfriend's house on a Sunday night and the song “Houseplants” came on. I was immediately sucked in. This band from Brighton, England has a pretty wild sound. As you go through their music you just don’t know how to entirely classify them. They are kind of trancy, psychedelic, loud, and then you get horns in the mix. Lead singer Ollie Judge reminds me of someone, but I can never pinpoint it. Whatever it is, I love it. I love how he shouts.

I was pretty excited for Thursday night’s show at Baby’s All Right in BK. I got there early and met some cool photographers. We were all ready to experience this sold out show as people crammed into the venue. Pink Navel opened up with their set which was a combo of looping samples, rapping and comedy. They were pretty funny getting the crowd engaged with pop culture references and shared a song about their mom’s gazebo that met its demise in the last Nor’easter.

When Squid came on, I only had a brief moment before I felt like I was going to go flying on to the stage head first into the drumset. I managed to grab a few photos but I feel my age when I can’t keep my balance and can visually see the crowd's energy. It was immediate and so was Squid’s performance. I was able to enjoy some of their trancy jams while I closed my eyes and got pretty lost in my head somewhere in the back of the venue.

They played quite a few songs from their latest release Bright Green Field such as “GSK,” “Paddling,” and “Boy Racers.” There were a few songs I didn’t know and that is because their first EP is not on Spotify. I will do some hunting to find more of their music. I was a little disappointed I did not get to hear “Houseplants"  live but they did play “The Cleaner.” This just means I will have to go see them again, hopefully somewhere with a balcony.

"I am a proud music nerd and Jersey native. I have been a photographer for over 7 years and when I merged my two passions, it fit like a glove. My taste in music keeps on changing as I show up to live shows throughout the tri state area. I love writing about my adventures and getting into geeky convos about music. When I am not out with my camera at a show I am producing education videos for distance learning at my full time gig. Do not be mistaken by my Spotify account and lack of record collection, I am well informed on a lot of great music. I will see you out there trudging through the crowds of music pedestrians. Don’t get too annoyed if I sneak up in front of you to get a good shot. I promise I will be polite."
