Very few bands can lay claim to selling out a venue once, let alone twice; however indie superstars Tennis managed to do so and offered an immersive, soulful and vibrant experience reminding audiences why they’re one of the most noteworthy and eclectic acts around. Touring on their recently released record Swimmer, the band captivated the sold out crowd at Brooklyn Steel and brought their new material to life in a rich, sophisticated and groovy fashion.

Lead vocalist Alaina Moore was in radiant form as her vocals were sincere, dynamic and commanding. Her stage presence was intimate and electric, drawing the audience in. The rest of the band, including fellow founding member and Moore’s husband Patrick Riley, were in tremendous form as the setlist expertly navigated their established fan favorites and recent material with energy and momentum that was beautifully sustained throughout. The setlist also did a strong job of balancing out Tennis’ more upbeat numbers with their more tender ballad-based material to captivating effect.

Credit also to opening act Molly Burch who complemented the headlining act beautifully with an opening set that was lush and atmospheric; containing some understated yet affecting numbers as well. Burch’s set was warm and radiant and perfectly established the energy and tone of the evening, providing an effective transition for audiences eager to witness Tennis on-stage.

What truly made Tennis such a joyous experience is the passion and exuberance they displayed during their performance and how genuine of a connection they established in the process. The artistry, craftsmanship and honesty Tennis embodies in their music is truly what defines them as one of the most exciting, diverse and accomplished acts right now; their Brooklyn Steel set was more than a compelling showcase. With live music returning, there’s more than plenty of options but for those looking for intimate, personal and artful music, Tennis is an experience well worth seeking out.
