Asbury Park happily welcomed the Counting Crows to Stone Pony Summer Stage yesterday with open arms; embracing the multi-platinum, Grammy and Academy Award-nominated rock band with a completely sold-out show. Touring on their eighth studio album, Butter Miracle Suite One, their 20-song setlist was a perfect mix of older favorites and all of the tracks from the new album. I absolutely love that the Counting Crows change up their setlist for every show. It’s something that few bands do; and I feel is indicative of a group that is completely at home on stage, has excellent chemistry with each other, absolutely loves what they do, and wants to give their fans as much of their cherished catalog as possible.

Lead singer Adam Duritz’s tone was as smooth and rich as butter (pun intended) as he was backed by the amazing musicality of Jim Bogios (drums), David Bryson (guitar), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), David Immerglück (guitar), Millard Powers (bass), and Dan Vickrey (guitar). When you hear the perfect quality of the Counting Crows’ live performance, there’s no doubt left in your mind as to why they’ve sold over 20 million albums and are one of the most beloved rock groups in history.

Tons of dedicated NJ fans waited for hours in line earlier in the day to get their front row spot on the rail and sang literally every word of favorites "Mr. Jones," "Rain King," "A Long December," "Hanginaround," and the band's cover version of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi." What was equally compelling was how involved the audience was with The Butter Miracle tracks, a sure sign that the newer sound is still striking a chord with their audience. Butter Miracle Suite One, was released on May 21, 2021. The follow-up Butter Miracle Suite Two, will be released in the near future and will hopefully continue in the same vein, as the Counting Crows continue to enhance and progressively define the truest essence of the rock genre.

The Counting Crows finish up this leg of their US tour on August 27th in Illinois before heading abroad to spread the magic of their music until the end of this year. Be sure to follow the band on social media so you can hook up with one of their shows when they return! You'll certainly be glad when you do!
