Rick Makin was regarded by many of us here in the Jersey Shore area as a celebrity in his own right. He was the forward-thinking features editor of the Asbury Park Press from 1972-1980 who instantly recognized the importance of assigning a lot of coverage of Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes as they rose to prominence. Also, under Makin’s leadership, the Press covered the sounds of Asbury Park as it gained stature as an internationally recognized rock music scene. The Asbury Park Press then named Makin editor of the editorial page, where his work was recognized with New Jersey Press Association Awards. He worked at the Press for 38 years, retiring in 2002. Rick died of COVID on Dec. 27, 2020.

In memoriam, his son Bob Makin has spearheaded the Rick Makin Memorial Scholarship for Humanities and Social Sciences at Monmouth University which will be awarded to students of journalism, music, theater, literature, and history, all of which were Rick’s great passions. Musicians on a Mission, the Jersey Shore-based charity of volunteer performers, presented a benefit at the Transparent Clinch Gallery this past Sunday, February 20th.

Heartfelt, passionate performances by Arlan Feiles, Bobby Mahoney, Sharon Lasher, George Wirth, Taylor Tote and Dave Vargo enraptured the audience and brought the community together in celebration and remembrance of Rick’s legacy. To continue raising funds for the scholarship’s $25,000 endowment, donations can still be made at https://bit.ly/3vj90Xg or by clicking the button below.
