On Thursday, February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. That same day, New Jersey’s Sean Tobin wrote “Song for the End of the World,” his latest release.
Hot on the heels of his 2022 album, Ghost of the Arcade, tireless singer/songwriter Sean Tobin re-entered the doors of Audio Pilot Studio in April of 2023. During a four-day stay on the Sussex County grounds, Tobin and a montage of musicians engulfed themselves in the recording process. When all was said and done, studio owner and producer Rob Freeman tracked, mixed and mastered ten new songs and five covers. “Song for the End of the World” will be the first of the new tracks to be released.
The track features Tobin on vocals and acoustic guitar, as well as members of his backing band, the Boardwalk Fire, David Patiño on drums, Jack Breslin on bass, and Jake Garbe on mandolin. Perhaps the most pleasing of sonic additions, though, is the banjo performance by Evan Dibbs.
“It’s sort of tongue-and-cheek,” said Tobin of the new single. “It’s as if the narrator of the song has accepted his fate…the fate of the world…when in reality he has the power to do something. To say something. To change the world’s outcome.”
Can’t say we didn’t try, sings Tobin, but he doesn’t really believe that.
“I think we’re getting lazy. I’m guilty of it myself. It seems to me people are giving up on the earth…on each other. I don’t want to be one of those people. I want to make folks think about the world’s end, fear it, and postpone it. We’ve only got one, after all.”
Tobin’s catalog of songs has grown tremendously in the last five years. With three full length albums, an acoustic LP, and three EPs already released, “Song for the End of the World” hints at Tobin’s seventh studio release in half a decade. If the album is anything like the first single, this will be the most folk-influenced work by Tobin to date. “Song for the End of the World” is available on all streaming services now.
