Philadelphia singer-songwriter Jackson Vincent independently released his latest EP Foxtrot on April 14th. The home-recorded release puts forth a gloomy sound which Jackson dubs “music for ghosts;” a sound that combines genres such as folk and grunge with lo-fi elements.

The EP fades in with a faint backbeat and muddied guitar chords, which sounds as an out-of-focus picture appears. As Vincent’s soft, ethereal vocals paints the mix, his “music for ghosts” becomes more clear: “It can get dark and surreal at times, but it’s a vibe that we’ve all found ourselves stuck in. It’s a type of moody tune that would play as a ghost drifts across planes,” says Vincent.

Foxtrot presses forward with “Running On Empty,” a song that effectively captures the feeling of the sun shining through dark storm clouds on a humid summer day. The gloom aspect is ever present, but the pop-adjacent vocal melodies and sublime chord progressions manages to take center stage. “Hit Me” follows up with a faint distorted guitar under Vincent’s effect-heavy vocalizations.

Silver Shoes” offers a warm, minor-key vibe with an earworm chorus that offers the mantra, “don’t you worry.” The EP-closer “It Is” is laden with gentle guitar licks and reverberating bass under Vincent’s vocoded melodies. The final Foxtrot tune deals with themes of loving and accepting important people in our lives, exactly as they are: “Come on baby, give me everything / I swear I’ll take it all / I swear I’ll love it all.”

Foxtrot is currently available on all major streaming services. Click here to stream the EP on Soundcloud.
