Asbury Park’s very own Sonic Blume shared their dreamy new single “Happy” on Friday, July 30th. The tune is the latest single off their debut full-length record We’re Drifting Further Apart, Aren’t We? which is due out August 13th via new independent label Shore Points Records.

LISTEN!!

The track starts with the rhythmic plucking of muted guitar strings before atmospheric guitars, shimmering synths, and earworm vocal melodies invade the mix. The interpersonal-as-ever lyricism offers glimpses of relationships through small moments: “I got you a sweater at the five and dime / But you didn’t want it, so now it’s mine / And we’re happy.” The new album marks a creative leap forward for the band, offering a high-energy, vocal-centric sound backed by 80s drum machines and clean-toned guitar riffage.

Sonic Blume got their start after high school friends Max Connery, Danny Murray, and Andrew Phelan realized their mutual influences from bands such as MGMT, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine and more. They burst onto the scene in 2017 with the release of their debut self-titled EP and went on to play shows all over the garden state. Their 2018 sophomore EP Beach Karma was met with excellent reviews and college radio airtime, earning them further recognition. The band appeared on NJ.com’s “Top Acts to Hear in 2019.”

Their 2021 LP conjures what the band describes as a “dreamy world of escapism,” and deals with themes of longing, separation, and isolation, which are all too relevant in the post-COVID era. The album, produced by Eric Romero (The Front Bottoms, stillhungry), will feature their heavily-streamed 2019 single “Aubrey,” as well as the 2021 singles “Lucy” and “Today’s the First.” “Happy” is now available on all streaming platforms.
